Microsoft Games CEO Phil Spencer has commented on the success of the Fallout TV series on Prime Video, saying it has helped the “quirky” Fallout game series appeal to a wider audience.
Speaking at a Variety event, he said this was made possible in part by the creative trust and collaboration between Fallout executive producer Jonathan Nolan and Bethesda-based game developer Todd Howard.
“It was critical to build that creative trust early on so that our game team could both understand what they were bringing to the game in terms of the world, the setting, some of the hilarious humor, but also be willing to step back and let another very talented creator take over a medium that we weren't very good at,” Spencer said. “Any time we try to do something new, it should push the world forward. One of the things I really like about this TV show is that it's made the somewhat wacky world of Fallout more accessible to more people.”
The Total Disintegration TV show on Prime Video has attracted over 100 million viewers, making it the network's second most watched series after Rings of Power. A second season is in the works, and Macaulay Culkin recently joined the cast.
Spencer also said in the interview that no one should expect Microsoft to turn every one of its titles into a TV series or movie. Ultimately, it depends on whether the creative partnership is a good fit.
“We don't have to make a TV show or a movie for any individual entry, so it's best to do it with people we trust, with people we think can raise the bar for the series,” Spencer said.
In addition to the second season of Fallout, Microsoft is also working with Netflix on the Gears of War TV show and movie. There's also the Jack Black-starring My World movie, which will be released in 2025.
