Blizzard may have to consider writing it all off at some point, but not soon.
World of Warcraft is one of the most successful video games of all time. This month, it has been online and generating monthly subscription revenue for 20 years. But will developer Blizzard release a sequel instead of updating and expanding the existing game?
Game director Ion Hazzikostas told GamesRadar that at some point in the future, Blizzard might consider releasing a new game to completely change things up. But World of Warcraft 2 won't be launching anytime soon, if at all.
“Theoretically, at some point in the distant future, that could be something we'd have to seriously consider,” he said of the possibility that a sequel might need to be started back up to benefit the game and the community. “But as of right now, we have a large, vibrant and growing community of players that we're excited to serve.”
Hatzkostas went on to say that the reason World of Warcraft has been so successful is because it has reinvented itself from a technical standpoint over and over again over the years.
“We're constantly dismantling some of our old base systems and replacing them with scalable systems that support our new server architecture, new graphics pipelines, and new aspects of multiplayer interaction that were unimaginable in the original game,” he said.
Blizzard's priority right now is to “continue to serve” millions of players to the best of our ability. “We're making the improvements we think are best for modern players,” he said.
Many real-time service-based games have launched sequels, including Overwatch, Destiny and Counter-Strike, but World of Warcraft has stuck with its original model for now.
Blizzard tried to make another MMO with its Titan project, but that project was eventually canceled and some of the work was realized in Overwatch.
