Remedy Clarifies Its Stance on AI in Games

During a demo, a Remedy representative said that the company is not using AI to replace creative decisions or actors.

The topic of Artificial Intelligence has clouded the future of various industries, including video games. No one knows what it means for the future of game development, but Remedy, developer of Mindhunter 2 and Control, has made its stance on the topic clear, revealing that the company has been utilizing AI for years.

“Artificial intelligence is a very broad topic,” CTO Mika Vehkala said in Remedy's most recent financial report. “Remedy has been using a variety of AI models and techniques since before AI came along and generated interest. We've been working with our partners to look at the opportunities that this can bring. We are actually using some of the tools that are now more popular and better suited to our needs.”

Vehkala and Chief Product Officer Markus Mäki also emphasized that Remedy is not using AI to replace creative work or actors. Instead, the company is using the technology to tackle the “boring” parts of game development, such as tracking movement through motion-capture performances, and Vehkala revealed that Remedy has a dedicated staff whose jobs require them to keep a close eye on emerging technologies. But he added that Remedy won't be rushing into the field.

In October, Remedy debuted a teaser trailer for FBC: Firebreak, the upcoming 2025 Control spin-off. It was recently revealed that there is a trailer for Control 2 in the DLC for Mindhunter 2. The game currently has no release date. But these aren't the only future Remedy games that could be affected by the company's use of AI.
